This community residence program, located in a quiet Albany neighborhood, serves 12 men who have both a mental illness and an addiction. The program helps residents build skills necessary to live successfully in the community. The initial NARR standard for recovery residences was first introduced in 2011, and following similar collaborative processes, the NARR standards have been refined over the years and have been compiled into the NARR Standards Version 3.0. What are recovery residences?

It provides overarching leadership and management to NUWAY®, the NUWAY Recovery Foundation,Cochran Recovery Services, andThe Gables. Additionally, the NUWAY Alliance is available to partner with aligned organizations needing leadership and management to support recovery access. Level I homes are completely peer-based and offer the least amount of support. Residents are responsible for self-monitoring and staying accountable to each other.

Also, among recovery residence members, more 12-step mutual-help participation and lower levels of drinking and drug use in one’s social network predict better substance use outcomes and lower likelihood of arrest over time. Level 3 residences offer a paid staff supportive environment that offers life skills training and peer-based recovery supports. You might also find differences based on whether or not the recovery residence follows a “social model” approach. This approach emphasizes the role of community and learned skills in helping people to maintain recovery. As such, the types of relationships that promote recovery are peer-to-peer rather than peer-to-professional, so house staff may also be comprised of individuals in recovery.

David Best has an under-graduate degree in psychology with philosophy, a Masters degree in criminology and a PhD in the psychology of addictions. He has authored three books on addiction recovery and has written more than 170 peer-reviewed publications and around 70 book chapters and technical reports. Residents will be well suited to take on student leadership positions and help to decide how to best continue to support recovery on Hawk Hill. The term “Recovery Residence” was adopted by NARR and refers to standards-based recovery housing. As the sole Michigan NARR Affiliate, MARR certifies provider compliance with the NARR standards and code of ethics. The standard is based upon the Social Model of Recovery Philosophy which emerged in California some 70 years ago, attracted science – based academic researchers over the following decades which, in turn, led to Social Model expanding nationwide in the late 60’s. Recovery – oriented housing founded on Social Model principles continues to be studied academically due to its proven effectiveness in promoting and sustaining long-term recovery. Members of our collegiate recovery program participate in a number of social and fun events to help build connection in our community. Each WVARR-certified residence will have completed a thorough application process, including peer review of policies and procedures and an on-site home inspection.
